February is Mes de Arte at ISLA. It is a month-long celebration of visual arts and the incredible talent of our young students.
Art is an important aspect of our educational philosophy. The ISLA curriculum is based on a cultural educational model that incorporates stories, traditions and geography of Spanish-speaking countries into each lesson. Through art we support other aspects of cultural education for an integrated approach to learning and greater global understanding for our students.
We believe children flourish when they are given space for creativity. It is amazing how much latent talent has been discovered in our students through art.
This year, ISLA took inspiration from Latino/a and Latin American artists whose work is part of a Nasher Museum exhibition: Pop América, 1965-1975 and centered the month around this iconic artistic period.
Students ranging in age from 3 to 17 made original pieces to form a beautiful collection of their own Pop Art. Over 50 pieces of artwork in total! With the collective efforts of teachers, students, volunteers, and supporters a "gallery" space was created at St Thomas More Catholic School, where our young artists could share their talents with the public.
ISLA Pop América, our first ever student art show, opened on February 23rd for a one-day exhibition. We are very proud of what our student artists created and hope this year's exposition will be there first of many more to come!
